A mystical circle
Circles seem to have a deep significance for Quakers and those of like mind Eye was enthralled to hear the novelist Marina Lewycka sharing one of her secret places with listeners of BBC Radio 4’s jaunty Saturday Live programme Marina, as readers of this column know, is the author of Two Caravans and A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and is an attender at Sheffield Meeting She took her Saturday Live interviewer, JP Devlin, to a Bronze Age settlement above Sheffield where a stone circle is the stuff of local legend Nine ladies and a fiddler were believed to have danced on the moors there and were turned to stone Bronze Age puritanism no doubt The circle is a place of mystical contemplation for Marina, she said, when she was ‘bunking off’ from writing
