Sarah Alldred explains how Quakers discussed spirituality and sexuality at Manchester Gay Pride
In the mystical tradition, sex is not only a personal act but an opportunity for communion with God
Dorothee Soelle
Being not long after York Yearly Meeting, the timing seemed apt for Quakers to be hosting what had been a pre-planned gathering in a gay bar on Manchester’s Canal Street to explore attitudes to spirituality and sexuality It was part of the week-long Gay Pride celebrations
For those Quakers who took part and who attended the event, the evening was as much an exploration as it was for the visitors A Quaker-led discussion evening in a gay bar in Manchester was a new landscape and there was certainly an anxious buzz in the air as to what was to unfold The venue was the second floor of Mantos Bar on Canal Street looking out over Manchester’s skyline; the sun was setting as the evening began To welcome people, live folk music played in the background courtesy of two Quaker-supportive musicians, only a single halogen spotlight lit the room and throughout the evening the fridge behind the empty bar rattled to its own rhythm
