I share the concerns expressed by Steven Burkeman and Andrew Gunn (11 September) Friends understandably feel close to Friends Provident (FP) because of the shared name as well as references in the company’s literature to its Quaker heritage and values derived from it
Practically, however, the only formal link remaining from constitutional changes twenty-five years ago is the Stewardship range of investments In return for agreement to the removal of a requirement for Quaker directors along with ethical constraints applying to the whole of the company’s investments, the board had agreed that they would try to set up ethical funds which would continue to meet Friends’ own needs Several Friends had previously worked to develop the Stewardship range of funds, which by 1984 were needing only an investment manager
