Introducing Young Friends General Meeting - preview
Siobhan Haire gives the lowdown on the workings of a ‘roving’ Meeting
Young Friends General Meting (YFGM) has, on occasion, felt itself to be the black sheep of the extended Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) family Often out of touch with the rest of the family, introspective at important occasions, wrapped up in its personal issues and unwilling to take part in family life The metaphor could be further embellished… But times they are a-changing, and YFGM is coming back to the fold this year, and looking forward to catching up with its relatives
‘Hold on!’ I hear you cry, ‘it’s lovely having a Young Friend writing for the Friend – I thought they were all practically illiterate – but what is YFGM?’ Well, dear reader, let me explain Young Friends General Meeting (a snappy nom-de-guerre/paix if ever I heard one) is effectively a non-geographical Meeting within BYM, operating three weekend gatherings per year and (hopefully!) other miscellaneous gatherings for Friends aged eighteen to thirty-ish Where Holiday School and Junior Yearly Meeting end, we begin, and when you’re tired of sleeping on Meeting house floors, you can go and be a proper Quaker We’re like a cadet training school crossed with an extended debutantes ball for young Quakers
