Testimonies or principles?
Is it possible that Michael Oppenheimer (4 September) has created a semantic difficulty by using the wrong preposition? To refer to the ‘Testimonies of Truth, Equality…’ may be inconsistent with the meaning of the word ‘testimony’; but are we not usually in the practice of referring rather to the ‘Testimonies to Truth, Equality…’? (The use of the term ‘The Peace Testimony’ may appear an exception, but is not open to the same objection as ‘Testimony of’)
To refer to our Testimonies as ‘Testimonies to’ conveys that they require us to bear witness, which is essential By comparison with this to refer to ‘Quaker Principles’ or ‘Quaker Values’ might be simpler, but it would certainly not be more apt: it would be both feeble and inexact
