Irish Friends focus on peace and sustainability
Irish Quakers have focused on peace, sustainability and connection to the ‘other’ at their Yearly Meeting
At Ireland Yearly Meeting (IYM), Quakers from across Ireland agreed to take on the environment as a corporate concern, by accepting as a Yearly Meeting committee the fledgling ‘EcoQuakers Ireland’ movement, which arose from a session on ‘caring for creation’ at Yearly Meeting in 2008
As part of its consideration of peace, IYM received an update on the ‘Why Violence?’ campaign (‘Irish Quakers ask: why violence?’, 27 March 2009) This work, initiated by a group of Friends opposed to violence as a form of media ‘entertainment’, has now expanded beyond Quakers to include other churches and peace movements IYM also heard about the ongoing work of Quaker House Belfast to promote peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, while a special interest group on Quaker Service (formerly Ulster Quaker Service committee) looked at the group’s activities, from its formation in 1969 in response to the outbreak of violence in Northern Ireland, to the present, fortieth year of work – but there’s still much work to do
