Quakers and marriage
Marriage ‘according to the usages of the Society of Friends’ is a spiritual matter
  • Since 1753 (in England and Wales) we have had the right to combine this with the secular registration of marriage, recognised by the state
  • But these are two quite different functions

  • Stephen Cox (14 August) points out that we are engaged in a Spirit-led struggle with the truth, rather than the dispassionate application of an abstract principle
  • He is right, I feel, and the truth seems infinitely more important than an abstract principle
