The Balkans Peace Park Project - preview
There are few places in Europe so isolated or so beautiful as the area where Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo meet Jagged limestone mountain peaks rise above tight wooded valleys Poor roads and harsh winter weather isolate the small settlements in these valleys where local people live out a largely traditional lifestyle, producing almost all of their own food and drink But it is also an area under threat: the population is declining as young people leave for towns and cities; the landscape is being scarred by illegal logging and unregulated building; and the religious and political differences of the past lie across the communities of the region and hamper attempts to build initiatives to improve matters
