Quartets – and Quakers? - preview
‘The most sublime form of democratic anarchy
  • ’ Hmm, reminds me of one or two Quaker events I have experienced (mentioning no names), but in fact this is a description of the inner life of the professional string quartet from a BBC 4 film shown on 17 April
  • 4 Better, 4 Worse – The Anatomy of a String Quartet, directed by Reiner E Moritz, focused on The Lindsay Quartet (now sadly retired as an entity) as they prepared for an appearance at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland

  • As a music lover and a student of human behaviour, I watched with growing fascination as the film explored the relationships and interactions that create unity and great music from disparate parts
  • Several professional quartets were shown, in rehearsal and performance
  • ‘Four instruments very much alike but a little bit different’, as one player said, and four individuals with often very distinct personalities
  • In fact, there was an insistence by some of the musicians interviewed that the greater the range of personalities, the greater the potential for creative expression
