Remembering the treasure we have in each other - preview
Quakers from Britain Yearly Meeting have supported people and programmes in former Yugoslavia for eighteen years. The formal institutional support has now come to an end. The former Quaker representatives in the region tell us what was done
The armed conflict in ex-Yugoslavia started officially and dramatically in June 1991 The involvement of British Quakers began as soon as the first ceasefire was proclaimed Individual Quakers looked for opportunitiesties to work with groups on the ground who had opposed war, destruction and the blatant killing of the neighbouring human beings Those groups were newly formed and extremely fragile They were examples of developments of the civil sector in the different areas of the war
Quaker Peace & Service (QPS) and subsequently Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW) of Britain Yearly Meeting saw a need to meet people who had opposed the armed conflict and to offer some help and support in the form of education to work with internally displaced people They also volunteers to help in that task, as well as tomake small grants to numerous organisations formed throughout the warring area
Goran Bozicevic, Goran Bubalo and Zorica Trifunovic
