Hospital chaplains
My local hospital has a team of chaplains and trained ‘lay’ people, who offer ‘spiritual, pastoral and religious care to all who request it’ (17 and 24 April)
Healing is not just about the mechanics of the body; chaplains can fulfil a valuable listening role for patients and their relatives, when medical staff are often too stretched to do this
Importantly, they are also there to support NHS staff: caring for people in distress and pain can be emotionally and spiritually challenging Good employers (ultimately the taxpayers), will promote the wellbeing of their staff, if only to reduce absenteeism and high staff turnover due to stress
