‘I’ve always loved handling things’ As if to demonstrate this, John Creed strides around his studio, picking up photo albums, technical drawings and pieces of African ironwork to illustrate his points ‘From a very early age I was always crafting little instruments… I was always in the shed crafting things’
This Quaker ironworker and silversmith (though not jeweller – ‘I was never interested in pattern and decoration and I think that was strongly the Quaker influence’) lives outside Glasgow in a house with many features he created himself Looking around, one quickly becomes aware of coatstands, hooks and even door handles bearing a typical John Creed motif: strips of black iron, twisted and bent In the door handles, which have their moving parts exposed, ‘you’re seeing the function and you see the movement’, he explains
