Israel to allow conscientious objection - preview
Israel has made a potentially significant stance on conscientious objection to military service
In a statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, the Israeli government announced that it would allow conscientious objectors to serve with a civilian body independent of the military Previously the country has allowed exemption from serving in the military on grounds of conscience only in very limited conditions for women and not at all for men
‘My reading is that this is the first time, at least at the international level… that they‘ve actually said yes, we’re going to do something about this’, said Rachel Brett, human rights & refugees representative at the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO)
