Robin's gift - preview
It happened during a weekend on Quakers and Mysticism at Swarthmoor Hall, home of Margaret Fell and the earliest centre of Quakers outreach and mission A week or so before the gathering, Robin phoned up the Hall telling them how important it was for him to attend the course The course had been full but one person had dropped out so there was now room for him
When we first met on the Friday afternoon, he told me he had met me at Brighton Meeting At first I did not recall this, but later I remembered a shy man coming over to me after Meeting to introduce himself During the weekend he seemed nervy He made one or two comments that I recognised as the slightly aggressive attempt of a shy introvert to state his deeply held convictions He talked of angels and his dislike of hierarchies and rituals; and the need for all religious organisations to evolve Little by little he opened up to us, but he seemed to need to summon up courage to open up to strangers
