In our enthusiasm for Charles Darwin I hope that it won’t be overlooked that what I think of as ‘fundamentalist Darwinism’, summarised as ‘survival of the fittest’, provided a justification for the Nazi death camps (the evolutionary destiny of the master race was to enslave and eliminate what it saw as defective human stock) and for the slow genocide of the aboriginal races of the American and Australian continents
It also sees no point in trying to prolong the lives of the old (like myself!), the chronically sick and the mentally or physically disabled They serve no useful evolutionary purpose As for endangered species and threatened ethnic groups, extinction is their inevitable evolutionary fate Let it take its course
