Letters from Shirley Heathcote and David Saunders (20 February) ask us to be willing to review our religious convictions in the light of developments in evolutionary theory and to define a positive non-theist position I would not necessarily describe myself as a non-theist but I would like to make a personal attempt to answer these two questions
In his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, the evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins made a strong case for the evolution of altruistic behaviour in various animal species, including Homo sapiens He argued that it is a very important for the survival of many species that parents should care for their young and that in social animals this caring instinct can extend to other members of a family and to members of the wider group In the chapter ‘Nice guys finish first’ he gives examples of how animal behaviours have evolved to be of general benefit to the group, not just personal benefit to the individual
