It was so good to read the article by Bob Johnson: ‘Prisons – Quakerism’s latest challenge’ (30 January) This subject has become close to my heart since I was imprisoned myself at HMP Acklington Seeing the prison system from this side of the fence has been a real eye-opener
Statistics have shown that the current prison system is not very effective at reducing crime, which should be the ultimate aim of the judicial system When entering prison you are stripped of all respect and dignity, denigrated and dehumanised You become your crime only There is lots of talk about prison reform, although what there is in prison is often negated by its negative environment What is prison currently? It is state-sanctioned punishment
