First Quaker canon installed - preview
A Quaker has been installed as an ecumenical canon at Chelmsford Cathedral in what is believed to be a first appointment of its kind
Jennifer Hodgkin, clerk of Maldon Local Meeting and a long-time ecumenical Quaker, is one of five ecumenical canons at the cathedral She was installed together with three Anglican canons on Sunday 22 February
The appointment has met with approval from both Quakers and Anglicans Gillian Ashmore, recording clerk of Britain Yearly Meeting, said: ‘We are delighted that a Quaker is being recognised in this way Many Quakers are engaged in ecumenical work and it is pleasing when someone of Jenny’s worth is being given the opportunity to be of wider service’ Chris Newlands, chaplain to the bishop of Chelmsford, described Jennifer as a ‘tremendous individual’ and said that the appointment was ‘very valuable’ for the cathedral ‘It really affirms the fact that we seek to be a place of welcome to all and we welcome people as they are’, he said
