First Quaker canon installed - preview
A Quaker has been installed as an ecumenical canon at Chelmsford Cathedral in what is believed to be a first appointment of its kind

  • Jennifer Hodgkin, clerk of Maldon Local Meeting and a long-time ecumenical Quaker, is one of five ecumenical canons at the cathedral
  • She was installed together with three Anglican canons on Sunday 22 February

  • The appointment has met with approval from both Quakers and Anglicans
  • Gillian Ashmore, recording clerk of Britain Yearly Meeting, said: ‘We are delighted that a Quaker is being recognised in this way
  • Many Quakers are engaged in ecumenical work and it is pleasing when someone of Jenny’s worth is being given the opportunity to be of wider service
  • ’ Chris Newlands, chaplain to the bishop of Chelmsford, described Jennifer as a ‘tremendous individual’ and said that the appointment was ‘very valuable’ for the cathedral
  • ‘It really affirms the fact that we seek to be a place of welcome to all and we welcome people as they are’, he said

  • Oliver Robertson
