The sensible idea that God might have chosen evolution as a really good system has been around almost as long as Darwin It’s the great scientist’s bicentenary anniversary next week and we will bring readers the historical Quaker reaction to The Origin of Species In the meantime, Eye has been looking at the work of Herbert Fox Standing, a Quaker biologist who seems to have married science and religion perfectly in his book Spirit in Evolution: from amoeba to saint (Allen and Unwin) published in 1930
