Theist or non-theist
Thank you for printing Edward Hoare’s letter (30 January) about theists and non-theists There is always a middle way I unite with much of what Edward says But I would ask him to remember that not everyone who believes in a power that fills the universe and even the core of our being feels that presence as a person Herein is one of the many paradoxes of faith Even those who cannot believe that God is personal have sometimes great difficulty in praying without using personal language! This does not worry me, as all religious language is metaphorical, and we are human As Edward says: ‘It is through the indefinable “that of God within” that we seek for unity in our worship and Business Meetings’ (my italics)
