‘Heeding God’s call’ – the peace churches link up - preview
Lizz Roe reports from an inspiring conference in Philadelphia at the dawn of a new era for the US
Sitting waiting for pizza in a family diner on Arch Street in Philadelphia, one of our ‘brothers’ stood up and asked us to pray for the seven people arrested that day during their act of witness against gun sales in the city We joined with him as his prayer invoked God’s aid and love and the willingness of those in authority to understand the call to right wrongs, and petitioned for the safety of those held by the police
This was day four of the historic gathering ‘Heeding God’s Call’ – an event convened by the peace churches (Quakers, Mennonites and Church of the Brethren) and attended by about twenty-five other denominations The event, held on 13-17 January, was organised in response to a growing awareness of the violence that exists both locally and nationally; it gave practical examples of things people could do to promote peace and allowed participants to describe their existing peace work
