Friends launch new UK-based charity for Hlekweni
Further reports of the social and economic collapse in Zimbabwe have emerged
There have been warnings about the imminent collapse of the schooling system because of inadequate teacher salaries, while Zimbabweans without access to foreign currency are, in the words of one observer, ‘in a bad shape’
Lee Taylor, clerk to trustees of the new UK charity Friends of Hlekweni, said that the Quaker-run training college in Matabeleland continues to operate thanks to support from British Quakers, among others ‘QPSW Quaker Peace & Social Witness money for the feeding scheme actually keeps the school going’, she said, explaining that while the scheme was originally set up to support pupils at the college, ‘the teachers are now obviously making use of it’ This has enabled the staff to stay in their posts rather than follow many other teachers and leave
