Death of a Friend - preview
Karl Chamberlain was already on death row when he first learned about Quakers. Maggie Allder shares her experience of Karl and then the story of the life and death of a valued member of Winchester Meeting told in his testimony follows
Towards one corner of the beautiful garden behind Winchester’s Meeting house is a tree, surrounded by a circle of stones, planted in memory of a Friend who died in June Very few of us (actually only one person) had met this Friend personally but many of us were his friends, writing to him and receiving his letters in return, reading his poems and learning from his discipleship
Karl lived thousands of miles and six time zones away, in a culture that seems more alien to home counties Friends the more we explore it For Karl was living out his life on death row in Texas, paying the price his state requires of some who commit the brutal crimes of which Karl was guilty
