Nick Tyldesley describes Bolton’s new means of outreach
Quakers are often perceived to be ambivalent towards fine art Simplicity is actively encouraged in Advices & queries So it may seem surprising that Bolton Quakers have commissioned artwork for the outside wall of our Meeting house
The idea of making a plain brick wall more visually appealing emerged slowly out of discussions among Friends Various bequests had been made and it was decided to spend some of these monies on refurbishment of the building The Meeting house is let out to many organisations during the week Quakers therefore have to engage in marketing the facilities of an attractive venue Friends felt that commissioning artwork from Bolton University would offer a practical project for students and an opportunity to enhance the urban environment of the town, while extending some understanding of Quakers
