When I started working in western Uganda there was a guerrilla war (similar to the Lord’s Resistance Army in the north) which happily ended in 2002 I was staying near a displaced people’s camp in the previous year when two teenage boys came to ask me to find them sponsorship for schooling They told me that only eight to ten people in the camp were literate and we discussed the possibility of their starting a reading club On my return a year later I was taken to the camp; astonishingly they had started a literacy school with no buildings, materials or money, but wih an unpaid trained teacher and a helper, and around 150 students of all ages and huge enthusiasm When I asked the teacher what she needed, expecting a request for salaries, she said that some letter and number charts would be very useful
