UN passes depleted uranium resolution
Last week the UN General Assembly passed a resolution on depleted uranium in conventional weapons by a margin of 141 votes to four The resolution highlights the potential harm to human health and the environment, and calls for UN agencies to update their research on the topic
Depleted uranium (DU) is used in armour piercing munitions because of its density and because it combusts upon impact It was used in the Balkans and in the 1991 and 2003 Iraq wars and the chemically toxic and radioactive dust created upon impact is thought to be the cause of numerous health problems, including cancers and birth defects
