A helpful point was made to me by a Friend in Philadelphia this summer She said: ‘Americans like to recall the birth of the United States We hear less about the gestation’ That gestation, the prenatal origin, is something in which Europeans and pioneer thinkers like the Quakers played a major part The men and women of the Enlightenment cannot be separated from George Fox, John Woolman and Margaret Fell
