Ian Hislop’s first call was on Susan V Hartshorne, whose father Cedric Vipont Brown joined the Friends Ambulance Unit in the first world war Susan showed a picture of him with other young men at an FAU training camp – ‘no different from any other gang of young men’, she said Cedric was gassed during duty and in his diary he wrote of the sights he would never forget Hislop asked about bravery ‘I thought he was a very brave man, but I would say that, wouldn’t I’, Susan admitted modestly
