‘An immigration removal centre can never be a suitable place for children’
A report from the prisons inspectorate has condemned the conditions in which children are held at Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre near Bedford
The report, which is sharply critical of the length of time some children are incarcerated and the detention of disabled children, also notes improvements in several areas including women’s safety and child welfare services However, it concludes that ‘an immigration removal centre can never be a suitable place for children’ and recommends detention of children ‘only in exceptional circumstances’
