In 1981 my husband and I were received by the Dalai Lama in his residence in Dharamsala It was an unforgettable occasion because of his kindliness and infectious happiness I have read and listened to him many times since, so was taken aback to read Andrew Wallace's comment (17 June) The Dalai Lama seemed to be responsible for some cruelties which I could not connect with the person I had met, so I asked the Tibet Society whose patron is the Dalai Lama for their understanding of what had happened Here is what they told me
