Edward R Murrow, whose wartime broadcasts from London influenced Roosevelt's decision to enter the war, came from a Quaker family Americans are currently marking the centenary of the birth of America's most famous reporter, who was born at Polecat Creek, North Carolina His family were farmers By the time he died from lung cancer in New York aged fifty-seven, he had established himself as a broadcaster of skill and courage Murrow's reputation for balancing news and opinion made him a highly respected practitioner of the broadcaster's craft
