A visit to America - preview
Oliver Robertson explains his forthcoming trip to visit and report on other Quakers for the Friend. He also describes his visa hassle
Love it or hate it, the USA is one of the most important and varied countries in the world Its international reputation may have taken a knock in recent years and its long-term dominance may be at threat from India and China rising, but America is still the country nobody can afford to ignore
And if that's true generally, it's also true for Quakers The US has the second highest Quaker population in the world and includes every type of Quaker going, from non-theistic liberals to evangelical Christian Friends The work in the world that British Quakers carry out is also being done by our Friends over the pond Many of the debates ongoing among British Quakers – about homosexuality, the centrality of Christianity and the decline in membership – are also raging in the USA
