School governor Will Harris charts the recent history of a Quaker state school
In 1680 William Penn helped found the Blue Idol Meeting House at Coolham in what is now West Sussex Local Quakers set up their own school in the village and in 1973 the county council took it over and moved it to its present site
Until I joined the governing body of the school six years ago, I had never heard of William Penn School and I guess that Friends are largely unaware of its existence The school is very small with fewer than 100 children ranging from Reception to Year 6 in four classes
