Welcome to Friends in Georgia - preview
Libby Perkins sets the scene and Julia Ryberg reports on how the new Meeting is going
Libby Perkins, recently retired from the international membership committee of Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), writes: A quiet and patient group of Friends has been growing for few years in almost complete isolation in Tbilisi, but with a thirst to discover more about Quakers and Quaker ways Distance, politics and language had conspired to keep them apart However, with the help of Friends House Moscow and Russian Friends, the Europe and Middle East Section (EMES) of FWCC and the international membership committee, the group has become a Recognised Meeting with seven full members and a number of attenders There is tremendous 'spiritual energy' among these Friends Peter Dyson from St Petersberg and Sergei Grushko from Moscow have been able to visit them twice, joined by Julia Ryberg the second time The Georgian Friends naturally still feel in need of spiritual support and contact with Friends internationally
