Brushes with Peace by Margaret Glover and Fifty Women of Substance by Tess Barnes
Two portrait exhibitions opened recently which commemorate achievements of different kinds by groups of people who generally don't have their portraits made
Both are by masterful painters and are collections of work that are the artists' initiative They illustrate the value of the portrait and of drawing from life, as a means of documenting not only a likeness but something beyond the likeness itself They also lend importance to the individuals concerned and to the wider issues that have brought them together – in this case the peace movement and the recent achievements of certain women
