Remembrance, not justification
As a Jew who is appalled by the oppression of the Palestinians, I can readily sympathise with Michael Oppenheim's difficulty over commemorating the Holocaust (15 February) But I don't respond the same way
Those who suffered at the hands of the Nazis were no less cruelly murdered and maimed because Israel is unjust If we say that our moral respect for the victims of the Holocaust is cancelled by Israeli actions, then we are allowing the victims' memory to be hijacked by war criminals You might as well say that the dead of two world wars are no longer worthy of respect because of the illegal occupation of Iraq
