Denmark Yearly Meeting - preview

Margaret Clarke of North Wales MM joins Danish Friends in developing ‘the intuitive and creative side of their brains’

Denmark Yearly Meeting was held at Storedam, north of Copenhagen, originally a Scout centre, now used as a Folk High School for older people
  • The theme was 'Inner Stillness in a Restless World', and the environment demonstrated this perfectly
  • Stands of leafless birch, motionless in the still air, bordered calm lakes and expanses of grass; the only sound, a woodpecker tapping

  • Danish Friends had decided to exclude business from this meeting
  • They had already dealt with YM business at their one Monthly Meeting in Copenhagen, which consists of two worshipping groups
  • For the YM itself, they wanted to deepen their spiritual lives, 'to develop the intuitive and creative side of their brains' and strengthen ties, in a more retreat‑like gathering
  • Arriving in expectation of a weekend of business, I felt a sense of release and rightness to be able to share this time at a spiritual level, to be with Danish Friends in a relaxed atmosphere, without the need to produce minutes
  • Danish Friends themselves found this such an uplifting and inspiring time that they are holding another residential YM at Storedam in 2008

  • Margaret Clarke, North Wales MM
