Rewriting today for a better future - preview
Jez Smith meets fellow Young Friend Emily Hunka, co-founder and chair of Rewrite, an organisation working with young refugees, migrants and other disadvantaged young people
I am inside an old industrial ware-house in south London in February A group of young people are writing plays based on community and loyalty One group is filming a CCTV scene that will appear on screen as part of a live performance, a couple of months later
The passion and commitment of this group of young people as they work together is plain to see They are all participants in REACT, a weekly drama-based group, run by the charity Rewrite They are from families with different ethnic and country origins, but come together under the auspices of Rewrite, a registered charity It brings children and young people from refugee and non-refugee communities together in drama and creative writing projects Rewrite aims to break down barriers of prejudice surrounding refuge and asylum, and to promote understanding and celebration of cultural diversity
