Quakers and sport
Joycelin Dawes (25 May) urges Quakers to become more involved in sport
  • My reservations about this relate to the sometimes avid competitiveness of sport
  • Whereas there is indeed much to be said in favour of sporting activities, I believe that we would serve Friends of all ages better not by promoting competition but – in the best Quaker tradition – cooperation
  • Outdoor activities which require cooperation include expedition canoeing, cycling in groups and many other healthy pursuits – including sky diving! Also, there is a very helpful publication (I can't find its title at the moment) which outlines a variety of non-competitive games which are very enjoyable, and highly suitable for Ffriends' get-togethers, as well as for gatherings of any or all ages generally
