Enjoyable Sufferings? - preview

Laura Wirtz of Young Friends General Meeting reflects on how Meeting for Sufferings works

If I heard correctly, in her after lunch speech the Recording Clerk said she had enjoyed her time with Meeting for Sufferings
  • We all enjoyed her farewell barbecue on Saturday in the Friends House courtyard, but how much fun can the Meetings themselves be? I have only been on Sufferings for a year and a bit, and have not properly met Elsa Dicks, but at each Meeting I have seen her sitting quietly at the clerks' table just as she does during Yearly Meeting
  • She has a very sweet smile when someone says something funny, and there must have been a fair few good jokes over the years though truth be told there aren't usually more than two per day during Sufferings sessions
  • One does wonder if it's frustrating for the Recording Clerk to attend a Meeting year after year, sometimes sitting through some pretty ropey ministry and pedantic minute-inputting and to not be a full participant of that Meeting
  • Could there be a secret behind that smile? Is she thinking of all the Sufferings she's attended and all her other committees and working groups and basking in the glory of how well all our processes of church government work?
