Quaker involvement brought to life - preview
David and Barbara Forbes report on a Parisian study weekend on Quaker history
Jeanne-Henriette Louis, the well-known French historian and Quaker, is co-founder with André Jacquesson and Pierre Lory of the study weekend held at the Quaker International Centre, Paris
During the weekend, Anne Boitel shared the findings of her doctorate on the Rivesaltes Camp near Perpignan from 1938 to 1942 That Quakers based at Villa Christophe played a role in aid work around this camp was clear, their best-known work being helping inmates to emigrate, an option much preferable to the harsh camp conditions This often meant, though, that parents were forced to separate from their children We focused, however, on how this rescue work fitted into a broader context of aid work by the CIMADE, YMCA, the Red Cross and other aid agencies
