Trident – a missed chance for a safer world - preview
Parliamentary researcher Jessica Metheringham watches as security men throw out protesters during heated Trident debate
The protests against renewing Trident were not enough: under this government protesting makes no difference at all For the Trident vote on Wednesday 14 March I watched the division from the public gallery above the floor of the chamber
At six o'clock exactly, two teenagers stood up in the public gallery behind me, holding up a large rainbow peace flag The doorkeepers immediately sprang into action, removing the flag and escorting out the protesters One of them – a girl who cannot have been more than seventeen years old – refused to go, slumping motionless down on the seat Even so, the doorkeepers, much taller and stronger than she was, were able to quickly carry her out, and I thought I saw a hint of annoyance behind her carefully passive expression
