QPSW and the International Development Committee inquiry into ‘Development Assistance and the Occupied Palestinian Territories’ - preview
Since Hamas won the Palestinian elections, the British government has suspended aid to the Palestin-ian Authority (PA)
  • Against that background, parliament's International Development Committee (IDC) published a report into aid to the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs) at the end of January
  • The report challenged the government to do more to influence Israeli government policy towards the Palestinians

  • Using the experience of the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), Quaker Peace and Social Witness submitted written evidence to this inquiry in the autumn
  • As a result QPSW was one of only four non-governmental organisations to be invited to also give oral evidence in front of the committee
  • The report quotes QPSW twice, in relation to the Israeli permit system imposed on Palestinians so that they can move through checkpoints in the West Bank and about the loss of land in Jayyous, a village in the West Bank where the EAPPI has been providing a protective presence for over three years now

  • Floresca Karanàsou, Middle East programme manager, Quaker Peace and Social Witness
