Tesco upsets Bournville residents over alcohol sales - preview
Bournville, the model Quaker village founded by George Cadbury in the 1890s, is facing a challenge with the revelation of a plan to build a new licensed Tesco store within yards of its boundaries

  • The proposal, publicly aired on BBC Radio 4's Sunday programme last weekend, would mean that a range of wines, beers and spirits would be readily available to those living within the Bournville area, as well as to those outside its boundaries
  • Although alcohol is allowed for private consumption within the area covered by the Bournville Village Trust, it cannot be sold for profit on the estate
  • As the planned new licensed premises are just outside the boundary of Bournville itself, it has raised a strong degree of local disquiet about the proposal
