Woolman’s Witness - preview

What do you know about John Woolman (1720-1772)? When I signed up for the Leaveners' Woolman's Witness project, a large-scale musical work for choir, orchestra, soloists and narrators, in 2002, I knew very little I had a mental picture made up of a selection of those stories we use in Children's Meetings: the undyed clothing, writing the neighbour's will and refusing gently to include his slave, the encounter with the native American Chief, something to do with a robin? One of those early Quaker eccentrics, in other words, principled perhaps to extremes and a bit off-putting, though maybe that could be attributed to the slightly sickly tone of that old-fashioned biography in the Meeting house library
