Friend, Oregon is a mysterious spot on the Wasco County map There are plenty of towns like these all across Oregon, especially once you are east of the Cascade Mountain Range They are ghost towns – once bustling boom towns from the days of the Gold Rush and the Oregon Trail There are fancifully named places like Bakeoven, Izee, Blitzen, Cornucopia, Horse Heaven, Quartzville, Granite, Bohemia City, Kinzua, Jawbone Flats, and Apiary The stories those towns could tell!
Probably one of the most notable ghost towns in Oregon is Shaniko The former 'wool capital of the world' almost rotted into the ground until recently The twenty or thirty remaining residents decided to preserve the old west architecture, spruce the place up, and restore a fascinating historical town The turn-of-the-century chapel hosts 300 weddings a year!
