Quaker mysticism: a bridge to Islam - preview

Reg Naulty explores the ways forward

George Fox gave mystical advice to Friends: 'live in the life of God and feel it
  • ' And feel it they did, so much so, that a mystical tradition was generated
  • What they felt was an inward experience of God's love, and, as a result, in Howard Brinton's words, 'with strength renewed, insight cleared, and desire quickened (they sought) to bind all life together in the bonds of love
  • '1

This process continued among Friends down through the centuries
  • Some mystics were eminent, like Fox and Penn, others humble, like Marmaduke Stephenson (1655) and the American Christopher Healy (1886), and some were great scholars, like Rufus Jones in the twentieth century
  • It can be fairly said that Quakerism is one of the main carriers of the mystical tradition in the West
