When early Friends talked of 'taking away the occasion of war', they recognised the need to engage in the sort of work that prevents future violent conflict It is this notion of taking away the occasion of war, or sowing the seeds of sustainable peace in the world, that has led so many Quakers to work in the areas of human rights, the reintegration of ex-combatants, the mediation of good relationships between nations and between ethnic groups, and in processes of post-war healing and reconciliation
