Quaker politicians can make a difference
Two Quaker politicians – both women – thousands of miles apart, have made news recently

  • In the USA's Chester County, Democrat Barbara McIlvaine Smith's crucial win over Republican Shannon Royer in Penn-sylvania ensured that her party finally tipped the balance and the state House of Representatives will belong to the Democrats for the first time in twelve years
  • Her main priorities will be education, creating a cleaner, healthier environment and making health care more affordable and accessible
  • 'I'm just thrilled to be given the chance to do what's right,' she said, adding that she will do her best to bring integrity and honesty back to politics
  • Commenting on her wafer-thin victory over her rival, McIlvaine Smith said: 'I did get a little concerned
  • Over the last few days it was intense,' During the process, she said she relied on her own religious beliefs to be patient
  • 'As a Quaker, we know how to centre and have faith
  • That's my strength
  • '
