Two Quaker politicians – both women – thousands of miles apart, have made news recently
In the USA's Chester County, Democrat Barbara McIlvaine Smith's crucial win over Republican Shannon Royer in Penn-sylvania ensured that her party finally tipped the balance and the state House of Representatives will belong to the Democrats for the first time in twelve years Her main priorities will be education, creating a cleaner, healthier environment and making health care more affordable and accessible 'I'm just thrilled to be given the chance to do what's right,' she said, adding that she will do her best to bring integrity and honesty back to politics Commenting on her wafer-thin victory over her rival, McIlvaine Smith said: 'I did get a little concerned Over the last few days it was intense,' During the process, she said she relied on her own religious beliefs to be patient 'As a Quaker, we know how to centre and have faith That's my strength'
