Latvia, a new star on the Quaker Horizon - preview
Latvia Quaker Meeting, recognised by Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), comprises three worshipping groups built around six members and with more applications in the pipeline
  • Starting from a membership base of one some two years ago, statistically that represents a very impressive rate of growth! But then I can vouch for the fact that the Spirit is also very strong
  • Being with Latvian Friends is both a spiritual and a physical joy

  • The annual weekend gathering from 28 April to 1 May brought 'Woodbrooke on the Road' to Liepaja in Latvia to give presentations on Quaker essentials
  • The majority of the forty people present were Latvian and Lithuanian together with some Russian Seekers
  • There was individual Quaker support from Denmark, Sweden, Britain, Moscow and FWCC Europe and Middle East Section (EMES)
  • The Latvians are good organisers and show every sign of developing Quaker discipline quite naturally
  • They are working well on translating English material into Latvian
  • The production on the last day of an Epistle which originated solely from within the worshipping group was impressive

  • Gerald Drewett
